Future Samsung phones could come without chargers

A report that made the rounds a couple of weeks ago took the tech world by surprise: Apple is considering selling the iPhone 12 without a charger in the box in an attempt to keep the price at a lower level.

And while this decision could seem surprising at first, it might after all be something that makes perfect sense: many people already own a charger compatible with the new iPhones, and those who don’t can still buy one separately.

And by the looks of things, Samsung itself is a fan of this strategy, so the South Korean company is now looking into a similar approach for its future flagship phones.

Samsung Galaxy S21 shipping without a charger?

A report from South Korean media reveals that Samsung is currently looking into the matter, albeit a decision on whether to remove the charger from new phone boxes is yet to be made.

Samsung is exploring this surprising change for the same reason as Apple. Not bundling a charger with its flagship phones could actually help make these devices more affordable, and Samsung probably hopes that most people already own a charger anyway.

As compared to Apple, whose iPhones use the proprietary Lightning connector, Samsung’s phone lineup almost entirely uses the USB Type-C port for charging and data transfers. As compared to Lightning, Type-C is a more widely adopted connector, so technically, new Samsung phone buyers could recharge these devices using chargers from other handhelds.

The good news is that Samsung Galaxy Note20, which is the company’s next big unveiling, won’t ship with any massive change in this regard, so a charger is still coming in the box. If such a plan gets the go-ahead, expect it to come into effect with the release of the Galaxy S21 in the spring of the next year.
