The Galaxy Note series might get the ax very soon

Samsung is planning major changes for its flagship device lineup, with a new report today indicating that the company is even pondering killing off the Note brand entirely.

Without a Note model, what Samsung aims to do is launch a bigger Galaxy S device that would also come with a stylus, technically making the Note-branded version part of the S series.

While this move might seem unexpected at first, it does align with the recent changes and speculation, and in the long term, it makes more sense for Samsung.

First of all, think of the similarities between the Note and the Galaxy S lineup. Without a few exceptions, such as the slightly bigger display, the stylus, and the larger battery, the Note 9 is expected to be extremely similar with the Galaxy S9+. So merging the two product families would help Samsung reduce development costs, and at the same time invest in a single brand that wouldn’t cannibalize a different model in its lineup.

Competing against the iPhone

Second of all, by launching an even bigger Galaxy S version, bigger than the Galaxy S+, Samsung could expand this series to three different models. This aligns with recent speculation that Samsung might launch three configurations of the Galaxy S10, one of which may feature a display slightly larger than the one of the S9+.

Basically, this means that next year, Samsung could launch the typical Galaxy S10 and Galaxy S10+, as well as a third model whose name isn’t yet known and which could represent the next iteration of the Note.

Such an approach could also help Samsung compete against Apple, who itself is working on three iPhone models this year. The bigger of them will be a Plus-sized version of the iPhone X, possibly with an OLED screen measuring 6.5 inches.

Remember that these are all just rumors for the time being, and you should take them with a pinch of salt. The next Note will see daylight on August 9 in New York, and it could be the last model to be launched under this brand.
