Patents reveal possible design of new Samsung flagship

Samsung is expected to take the wraps off the new Galaxy S9 in the spring of 2018, and recent rumors have indicated that the company could be in a hurry to bring the device to the market given the success that everyone predicts for the iPhone 8.

And since we might be closer to the debut of the Galaxy S9 than we thought at first glance, more information on the device starts reaching the web, including a possible look at the design of the smartphone, as suggested by a recent patent.

The drawings you see below are included in a patent application published by KIPRIS and which has apparently been filed in May 2016 for a Samsung device that could be the new Galaxy S9.

In addition to the edge-to-edge display, which is already being used on the Galaxy S8 series, the most striking change included in the patent is the sensor bar at the top of the screen, which clearly reminds of the imminent iPhone 8.

Apple’s notch

The sensor cutout, which Apple is said to be calling “notch” internally, is being used for housing sensors and camera modules which would otherwise have to be integrated into the display completely.

The iPhone 8 is projected to be the first model embracing such an approach, and the Galaxy S9 could follow in Apple’s footsteps in early 2018 with a similar design.

Since the patent was filed in May 2016, there are voices claiming that Samsung was actually the first company that considered such a design, though it goes with saying that with the iPhone 8 launching next week, Apple finalized its design a long time ago.

It remains to be seen if the two devices will indeed be similar, but for the time being, rumor has it that the S9 won’t bring too many changes in terms of sizes, with the same 5.8- and 6.2-inch displays to be used on the new generation as well.
