New S Pen to be announced in August, it seems

Once an exclusive feature of the Galaxy Note, the S Pen is now becoming a much more important part of Samsung’s arsenal in the long term, with the South Korean company now planning to bring it to more devices in its lineup.

The S Pen, for example, has already made its way to the Galaxy S21 earlier this year when the Ultra became the first non-Note device to support stylus input, and now Samsung has confirmed that more models would get it as soon as this year.

Without providing any specifics, Samsung revealed that S Pen support is coming to its foldable devices, and more importantly, the company is working on a dedicated version of the stylus specifically built for this form factor.

In other words, the S Pen aimed at foldable devices wouldn’t be the same one working on the rest of Samsung phones, as the company most likely plans a new design mixed with other capabilities as well.

Public launch in August

“We are out to set new heights and open up a whole new world of exciting experiences for even more people. I hope you’ll join us as we debut our next Galaxy Z family and share some foldable surprises — including the first-ever S Pen designed specifically for foldable phones,” Dr. TM Roh, President & Head of Mobile Communications Business, Samsung Electronics, said.

“Instead of unveiling a new Galaxy Note this time around, we will further broaden beloved Note features to more Samsung Galaxy devices. In the meantime, mark your calendars and tune in to our Unpacked event on August 11 to see what unfolds.”

The unveiling of the new S Pen is therefore projected to take place in August at a dedicated Unpacked event when the company will also introduce its new-generation foldable devices.

The August event was typically used for debuting new Note models, but this won’t be the case this year as Samsung is skipping a refresh for its phablet for the first time since launch.
