Samsung has announced a global recall of Galaxy Note 7 units following numerous reports of such handsets catching fire while charging. The incidents were quite severe, as they could potentially cause physical damage to smartphone owners.

All major US carriers have stopped selling Galaxy Note 7 smartphones, and some of them have even offered customers the option to trade their device for another one in the company’s portfolio or get a full refund. Some carriers have provided replacements until a new and safe Note 7 unit comes out.

Now Samsung has officially announced the launch of the US Product Exchange Program for Galaxy Note 7 owners. The company is willing to voluntarily replace Note 7 devices with new ones effective immediately.

Galaxy Note 7 owners can exchange the phone for a new one and get $25 gift cards

Tim Baxter, President of Samsung Electronics America, said,We are encouraging customers to exchange their Note7 by taking advantage of our Product Exchange Program. The safety and satisfaction of our customers is Samsung’s top priority.”

The program offers two choices to Note 7 owners, who can either exchange their current Galaxy Note 7 smartphone with a new one, available next week, or exchange the unit for a Galaxy S7 or Galaxy S7 edge and replace any Note 7 specific accessories with a refund of the price difference between devices.

Customers will also receive a $25 gift card or bill credit from select carrier retail outlets when choosing a smartphone in the Galaxy S7 line or the Note 7, as part of the exchange program. Galaxy Note 7 owners must contact or visit the retail outlet where they purchased the device in order to resolve the matter.

Samsung has also announced that it has identified the affected inventory and stopped sales and shipments of said devices. 35 cases were reported or 24 on a scale of 1 million sold units of Galaxy Note 7 with faulty batteries that caused them to catch fire.
