And of course, Apple could follow in the footsteps in 2022

The mobile phone industry is getting ready for another important tech upgrade, as Samsung, Oppo, and Vivo are projected to launch smartphones with cameras installed under the display as soon as this year.

This is according to mobile tipsters Ice Universe, who revealed on Twitter that Samsung wants to use this approach on a foldable launching in the coming months.

This new trend isn’t necessarily surprising, especially because all companies are investing in ways to increase the screen estate but at the same time retain their front-facing cameras.

And while Apple is using the notch, Samsung and other Android device manufacturers are developing this new approach which would at first land only on high-end models but which could expand to more devices at a later time.

Apple to embrace the same idea next year

And interestingly enough, Apple is also believed to be working on such an approach, though the company doesn’t seem to be ready to release it this year.

According to people familiar with Apple’s iPhone development plans, the notch would stick around for one more year, though the iPhone 13 launching in September would use a smaller design. But the 2022 iPhones are likely to give up on the notch entirely and instead adopt a similar idea like Samsung and the other Android OEMs, embedding the front-facing camera right into the screen.

This makes sense for Apple, especially as it’s believed the company also wants to bring back Touch ID for fingerprint recognition. And just like in the case of Samsung, Huawei, and others, Apple wants Touch ID to be integrated into the glass, again with the purpose of increasing the available screen estate without going for chunky bezels.

Expect more information on this new approach to make the headlines rather sooner than later as we approach the release date of the first phone using it.
