14 DAY TRIAL // The dual-curved display on the Galaxy S6 edge and Galaxy S7 edge models is certainly appealing to consumers, considering that this year’s Galaxy S8 flagship doesn’t even come with a flat screen variant. Now, Samsung wants to take things a bit further and has started work on a display with all sides curved.
Reports from Korea reveal that Samsung is working on a truly bezel-less screen with top and bottom sides curved as well. The display is said to allow for a screen-to-body ratio of over 98%, which would almost eliminate bezels.
Samsung Display and LG Display are both working on their own versions of a bezel-less screen, searching for ways to curve all sides of the display and almost completely eliminate top and bottom bezels from the picture.

However, the report mentions that there are some technical difficulties in the lamination process, which means that such a screen won’t be featured on a smartphone to be announced this year. It seems that when a display is curved on all sides, the four corners become useless, as the lamination process won’t let the areas register user touch and thus perform actions.
The lamination process is crucial for OLED panels as it includes the protective layer and the touch film, aside from other components. The report also mentions that the reason Apple decided in favor of a flat OLED display for its iPhone 8 is specifically the lamination process.
Samsung is expected to solve this issue by next year and announce a smartphone with all four curved sides, possibly the Galaxy S9. The Galaxy S8 came with a screen-to-body ratio of about 83%, and next year, Samsung will aim towards an even higher ratio and almost unnoticeable bezels, presumably on the next flagship. LG is also working on the new technology, and it remains to be seen if it will be incorporate it on the G7 or another device.
