Samsung is more than a month away from announcing the upcoming Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus, while information about the new phones continues to surface online. The latest report from The Investor shows that Samsung has doubled the first shipments of the Galaxy S8 compared to its predecessor.

The report says that the first shipment figure is up almost 40% compared to the Galaxy S7's 10 million units. If the report is true, then Samsung intends to make a big push with the Galaxy S8, which is Samsung’s first flagship smartphone after the Galaxy Note 7 fiasco.

Previous rumors say that Samsung has set a sales target of 60 million units for the Galaxy S8, which is higher than the estimated 48 million Galaxy S7 and 45 million Galaxy S6 smartphones that it sold.

10 million Galaxy S8 and 6 million S8 Plus units

The report also mentions that Samsung Display intends to supply 10 million OLED panels for the S8 and 6 million OLED displays for the larger S8 Plus for the first batch of shipments, set to be delivered during the January-March period. The initial shipment could reach 55 million units this year.

The report also mentions that Samsung might be securing more OLED panels than usual, as the company expects a shortage of such displays in the coming months, considering that Apple’s upcoming iPhone will also feature similar screens.

Both the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus smartphones are expected to come with dual-edge displays, while the screen size for the standard model is said to reach 5.8 inches and the larger S8 Plus might have a display size of 6.2 inches. The two smartphones will be announced on March 29 and are expected to be made available for purchase in mid-April. They will feature a rear fingerprint scanner and no physical home button in the front, together with Bixby AI assistant.
