14 DAY TRIAL // Microsoft and Samsung are expanding their collaboration in new areas, with the South Korean firm to begin offering cloud services of the software giant on more of its products.
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella and Samsung Electronics Vice Chairman Lee Jae-yong met in Seoul to discuss how the partnership between the two companies can evolve.
And as it turns out, Microsoft could begin using more chips manufactured by Samsung for cloud servers, while its partners may expand the use of cloud services to more areas, including smart devices like phones.
As reported by Retail News Asia, Samsung already uses Azure for products like system air conditioners to collect data such as temperature and humidity, and the same approach could be used for other smart devices in its lineup.

Microsoft uses this collaboration to praise Azure, with Satya Nadella also emphasizing that the use of artificial intelligence has lots of benefits as long it’s implemented responsibly.
“Take the example of Samsung Electronics’ IoT [Internet of Things]-based air conditioner that runs on Azure. By taking into account environmental factors, like the number of people, the smart air conditioner can save up to 25 percent in energy and 30 percent in costs,” Nadella was quoted as saying.
“We need to ask ourselves not only what computers can do, but what computers should do.”
Microsoft and Samsung are already working together in the smartphone industry, with the software giant selling Samsung devices in its own stores. At the same time, the South Korean phone maker is offering a number of Microsoft applications pre-installed on its devices, including Microsoft Office, Skype, OneDrive, and OneNote.
It remains to be seen how this collaboration would expand in the coming months, but for now, both of them are very keen on using each other’s technology for further improvements that would in the end create major benefits to customers.
