Jolla has just announced the new version of its Sailfish mobile operating system is now available for download. However, for the time being, only early access users will be able to install the new OS on their devices.

According to developers, “along with the simplified and beautiful new UI comes many fresh and enhanced features - this is for sure the biggest Sailfish OS software update so far.”

One of the most important changes included in the update is the fact that Sailfish OS 2.0 will support both smartphones and tablets.

Sailfish 2.0 comes with a huge changelog that lists some of the most important improvements and new features included in the update.

First of all, the new version of the OS brings a brand-new UI (user interface). For example, Home is now a carousel, and users will be able to swipe to cycle between Home and Events.

Furthermore, the App Grid can now be accessed from anywhere in the OS, even from inside an app, by simply swiping up from the bottom edge.

Next OS upgrade will include more improvements to user experience

Another gesture introduced by Sailfish 2.0 is swipe down from the top edge of the screen, which will open Top menu with lock action and ambiences. The currently active ambience will be marked with an indicator, but users will be able to change it to close apps directly with one top swipe.

Some improvements to Android apps have been implemented too, such as the notifications which now wake up the display. Also, it appears that Sailfish 2.0 will make Android apps use the “Chat” system tone for notifications, and alert with vibration and notification LED.

With Sailfish 2.0 OS installed, users will be able to capture video clips in H.264 format, which hasn't been available until now.

There are quite a lot of other new features and improvements included in the update, so if you want to know more, make sure to check out the full Sailfish OS 2.0 changelog.
