The open-source Rygel DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance) media server software has been updated earlier, May 23, 2016, to stable version 0.30.3 and development build 0.31.1.

Rygel 0.30.3 is the third maintenance release in the stable 0.30.x series of the software, which is being distributed as part of the GNOME Stack, bringing users a few hacks and fixes to make their media streaming experience richer.

First of all, there's now a new hack that lets users play video files in the AVI format on their Philips TVs. Both versions include the new hack for Philips TVs, along with support for starting Rygel on user systemd.

Then, it looks like the MediaExport features have received improvements to the artist view on the XBox 360 gaming console, also implemented in both Rygel 0.30.3 and 0.31.1 versions released earlier.

The GStreamer media engine has been updated

Among other interesting changes implemented in the new Rygel releases, we can mention that the GStreamer media engine has been updated in Rygel 0.31.1 to use local path instead of a FUSE (Filesystem in User Space) URI so that it doesn't employ giosrc.

It looks like the new features are being implemented in the development branch lately, and Rygel 0.31.1 ships with an option for the Tracker search engine integration that makes it possible to limit the exposed files to only a set of directories.

Of course, there are various other small fixes, as well as the usual translations updates, so we recommend that you check the changelog for Rygel 0.30.3 and Rygel 0.31.1 if you want to know what exactly has been changed or added.

While users of the stable 0.30.x branch can now update to Rygel 0.30.3 from the main software repositories of their GNU/Linux operating systems (e.g. Arch Linux), early adopters can jump into beta testing and download the Rygel 0.31.1 sources right now via our website.
