On July 20, Jens Georg, one of the developers of the well-known Rygel open-source media server software, announced that a new unstable release of Rygel was available for download and testing.

Looking at the changelog, which has been attached at the end of the article for reference, Rygel 0.27.3 is here to remove the streaming-only mode, to add an implementation of GUPnPACL that's based on a D-Bus interface, as well as to switch to version 1.51 of the DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance) protocol.

However, it would appear that the MediaExport plugin of Rygel received the most attention in the new snapshot, as the developers managed to re-add support for extracting album art, and they removed metadata harvesting support of multimedia files.

Moreover, timing output was added for HarvestingTask in the MediaExport plugin, along with style and translation fixes, blacklisting for broken URIs, re-addition of support for by-passing text files for the extractor, as well as a blacklist database table.

The database schema was updated to version 17, and support for database schema upgrades for version lower than 16 was removed from the MediaExport plugin of the Rygel software.

The software now requires GLib 2.40 and Vala 0.24

Last but not least, the Greek, Spanish, Hungarian, Occitan, Portuguese, and Slovak language translations were updated. The software now requires the GLib 2.40 library for the GSubprocessLauncher and GSubprocess components, as well as Vala 0.24 for bindings.

Those of you who want to test the new Rygel unstable release can download the Rygel 0.27.3 sources right now from Softpedia and compile it themselves. Please keep in mind that this is a pre-release piece of software and it's not recommended to install it on production machines.
