Long-time game developer and publisher Rovio announced it new title in the Angry Birds saga, as well as details that confirm this isn't a physics-based game like the previous ones.

The game is called Angry Birds Blast and you won't be blasting anything using the famous sling. Instead, Rovio will have you “blast” gems, as Angry Birds Blast is a match-three puzzle type of game.

“Angry Birds Blast is a balloon popping puzzler that charges you with freeing the birds trapped in colorful balloons. How they got in there is anyone’s guess, but it’s up to you to blast them to freedom. Solve puzzles, and pop pigs in a whole heap of levels full of bright bouncy balloons, balloon-bursting boosters, and bountiful bad guys,” explains Rovio on its blog.

Obviously, the game will be free-to-play, but it will definitely come with in-app purchases. Luckily, players can disable this feature from the Settings if they don't want to spend real money in Angry Birds Blast.

Another indication that the game will feature micro-transactions is the following mention found in the press release: “pre-register to receive a notification when Angry Birds Blast hits app stores. PLUS you get $9.99 worth of in-game gold for free to get you started!

Rovio hasn't been too successful lately in the mobile gaming business, as its most recent titles didn't gain too much hype from players.

With the release of Angry Birds Blast, Rovio seems to be determined to change the recipe that puts it among the most popular mobile game developers ever.

However, the new recipe that Rovio is trying to adopt is nothing new. Another giant in the mobile gaming business, King made match-three puzzlers very popular with its Candy Crash smash hit.

Angry Birds Blast seems to be a game in the same vain as Candy Crush, so let's see if it manages to provide the same level of addiction as King's games.
