OnePlus condones rooting and unlocking of bootloaders

OnePlus has just announced the OnePlus 2 flagship, which arrives with nifty specs and a decent price tag. But since yesterday, a question has popped into the heads of those whose attention has been captured by the new OnePlus 2: Will the producing company maintain the tradition of allowing users to unlock the bootloader on the phone without voiding the warranty, just like it did with the original OnePlus One?

As Android Soul reports, the answer to this question seems to be ‘Yes.’ A OnePlus tech support person has confirmed to one of the publication’s readers this will indeed be the case. But there’s a caveat, as not all tinkerings will be covered.

So let’s say you submit your broken device to the OnePlus’ service center. They will accept it and examine it, and if they find you have unlocked the bootloader, the team will make sure that the problem isn’t directly related to or caused by the rooting of the device or the installation of a shady custom ROM.

Rooting won't automatically void the warranty

The rooting of the device allows users to install system level apps that could end up damaging the device permanently. So if such a scenario is found to be true on a OnePlus One or OnePlus 2 submitted to repairs, the warranty of said device will become void and the problem will not be fixed for free.

We have to appreciate OnePlus’ openness to this matter, which is in stark contrast to other OEM’s practices, like Samsung, HTC or LG, which aren’t giving unlocked devices a chance.

The OnePlus 2 was launched into the wild with a 5.5-inch LCD HD capacitive touchscreen display with 1080p resolution. The handset will be using the services of a Snapdragon 810 processor working in concert with either 3GB of RAM or 4GB of RAM, as well as 16GB or 64GB of storage.

The phone also boasts a 13MP main snapper with OIS (optical image stabilization) and laser autofocus, and a 5MP selfie camera.

The new handset will ship out with OxygenOS 2.0 out of the box, which is based on Android 5.1 Lollipop but also brings into the equation some Android M features.
