The development team at Crystal Dynamics, publisher Square Enix and platform holder Microsoft have long said that they have a big plan for downloadable content for Rise of the Tomb Raider and the three companies are finally willing to offer a range of details for all those who picked up the new Lara Croft adventure.

The first new addition is coming on December 29 and is called Endurance mode, allowing players to try and survive in the wilderness with limited resources and with increased hostility from the environment.

Gamers will also get access to a new weapon and outfit, and they also have the option to try and reach the top of the leaderboards and become the Ultimate Survivor.

Baba Yaga: The Temple of the Witch for Rise of the Tomb Raider will be launched early next year and takes gamers to a special forest area where Lara Croft will have to deal with new opponents and explore a new tomb that's specially designed to offer an increased challenge.

The official announcement on the blog of Larry Hryb adds, "Is the witch, Baba Yaga, truly haunting the forbidden forest? Or is there more to the legend?"

Gamers who want to experience something different will also get access to a new Cold Darkness Awakened experience, a horde mode that will allow Lara Croft to battle waves of infected enemies while searching for equipment that can improve her changes, including a new weapon and outfit.

Rise of the Tomb Raider will also get more expedition cards and extra equipment via DLC

Crystal Dynamics wants to make sure that players can stay engaged with the title even if they are not interested in the coming modes, which means that it will give them ways to explore already offered content from a new perspective.

When it comes to expedition cards, Rise of the Tomb Raider will get access to a Silver card pack, which guarantees an Uncommon, a Gold version, coming with at least one Rare, an Advantage package, with a selection of five Expedition cards designed to offer a gameplay edge, a Challenge pack, filled with restrictions, and a Wild Expedition one, each with a unique impact on gameplay.

There are also plans to expand the options for weapons and outfits for Lara Croft, although the changes they will deliver are mostly cosmetic.

Gamers will be able to get access to a Prophet’s Legacy Pack, which adds the Immortal Guardian, a card pack and the Piercing Truth, the Ancient Vanguard Pack, featuring the Ancient Vanguard, Guiding Light and cards, and Wilderness Survivor Pack, with the Nightshade outfit, a Deathsong Bloody Hatchet and card pack.

Rise of the Tomb Raider is at the moment only offered on the Xbox One, and when the game arrives on the PC and the PlayStation 4, it's likely that a bundle featuring all the extra content will be offered.

The new Lara Croft title has been well received by both gamers and critics because it offers an expanded take on the tomb raiding of the first title in the rebooted series.
