Rescatux developer Adrian Raulete informs Softpedia today (January 18) about the immediate availability for download and testing of the fifth Beta build for the upcoming Rescatux 0.40 Debian-based Live CD targeted at system rescue operations.

According to Mr. Raulete, Rescatux 0.40 Beta 5 follows up on the previous Beta 2 build, which apparently we missed (it introduced support for GUID Partition Table (GPT) partitioning schemes), introduces the long-anticipated UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface) boot support.

"It does not support Secure boot yet. The reason is we are going to rely on the Debian-cd team work inside Debian itself and they have not finished with it yet," said Adrian Raulete. "I am pushing this work into Debian so that live-build has UEFI boot support by default. If you have a UEFI boot-only system feedback is welcome."

Users need to use Boot-Repair for fixing specific UEFI issues

The UEFI boot support implemented in Rescatux 0.40 Beta 5 refers only to the Live CD, allowing users to boot it on UEFI machines, but at the moment it is not yet possible to fix specific UEFI issues using the native options provided in the Rescapp tool. The Rescatux devs suggest users to use the included Boot-Repair utility for their UEFI problems.

Along with the GPT support added in Rescatux 0.40 Beta 2, the developers managed to introduce three new features related to GPT operations. They are Gptsync for creating hybrid MBRs, the ability to recompute hybrid GPT/MBR CHS, as well as support for checking bios_grub partitions on GPT.

As usual, those of you who wish to take the Beta builds of Rescatux 0.40 for a test drive can now download the Rescatux 0.40 Beta 5 Live ISO images for either 64-bit or 32-bit platforms right now via Softpedia or directly from the project's website, where they'll find all the information they need about the Debian-based system rescue Live CD.
