Apple expected to kill off the iPhone mini

We’ve known for a while that the iPhone mini is getting the ax this year, but according to a recent report, the 5.4-inch form factor could live on for at least one more generation.

First and foremost, let’s review the essential info.

Apple launched the iPhone mini specifically to offer a smaller alternative to its larger devices. With a 5.4-inch screen, the iPhone mini more or less appeals to buyers of classic iPhones who fell in love with the 4.7-inch displays and don’t want to carry a larger device in their pockets.

The bigger problem for Apple, however, was the market performance of the mini.

Since this debut, the sales of the iPhone mini have been well below expectations, with most people claiming that Apple failed to make this device a hit despite occasional aggressive marketing to highlight its benefits.

The iPhone mini was refreshed last year when Apple launched the iPhone 13 lineup, but the slow sales continued for one more generation.

New iPhones just around the corner

People familiar with the matter said the Cupertino-based tech giant has now decided to abandon the iPhone mini when the iPhone 14 lineup is announced.

But according to a report from 91Mobiles citing a “top-tier Apple channel partner in the Asia-pacific region,” an iPhone 14 mini might still be coming. The Apple partner has reportedly started the preparations for the debut of the new iPhones, which will happen on September 7, and an iPhone 14 mini is apparently still on the table.

Apple could therefore stick with the same lineup, though this is highly unlikely. People familiar with the matter said on several occasions that the iPhone mini would get the ax and instead, Apple would introduce an all-new iPhone 14 Max fitted with a 6.7-inch display.

For the time being, everyone should just take such info with a healthy pinch of salt, especially because the debut of the new models is just around the corner.
