New iPhone could drop the Lightning connector

We’ve known for a while that Apple is working on an iPhone without any ports, and now people close to the matter believe the launch could happen as early as this year.

While the Cupertino-based tech giant has so far remained tight-lipped on everything, a concept published by LetsGoDigital and designed by Concept Creator comes to provide us with an early look at what such an iPhone could look like once it gets the go-ahead.

The artwork envisions an iPhone that looks similar to the iPhone 12, with one big difference: there’s no Lightning connector because Apple wants to go all-in on wireless.

No Lightning connector

At first glance, this sounds like a big surprise, especially because Lightning is a proprietary port that Apple itself invented for its devices.

But on the other hand, by giving up on this connector and go all wireless allows the company to shoot two birds with one stone.

All-in on wireless connectivity

First and foremost, the Cupertino-based tech giant would insist on wireless accessories, something that makes sense given the announcements that came with the iPhone 12 last fall. In the long term, Apple itself is likely to launch more such products, with the company already offering a MagSafe Charger.

“The MagSafe Charger makes wireless charging a snap. The perfectly aligned magnets attach to your iPhone 12 or iPhone 12 Pro and provide faster wireless charging up to 15W. The MagSafe Charger maintains compatibility with Qi charging, so it can be used to wirelessly charge your iPhone 8 or later, as well as AirPods models with a wireless charging case, as you would with any Qi-certified charger,” Apple says.

And second of all, with a portless iPhone, Apple can respond to the pressure it has to face in Europe, where authorities call for the company to drop its proprietary connector and embrace a universal port like USB Type-C.
