Maximum gaming power in a mini form factor

Choosing the right keyboard sounds easy, but it really isn’t. Depending on what you do on the computer, the number of choices available out there is overwhelming, and more often than not, it all comes down to how much you want to spend on such a peripheral.

Razer, on the other hand, has one very clear objective: to build the perfect gear for gaming, so if you’re interested in a keyboard that’s specifically supposed to boost your gaming power, this is one of the first places you should check.

The Razer Huntsman V2 Analog, for instance, is a device that has a well-deserved place in the gaming gear world, even despite a hefty price tag. The analog function with variable actuation points has turned it into a legend, rapidly becoming a favorite option for pro gamers out there.

The number one downside? It was often considered too big, so carrying it around in a backpack wasn’t necessarily the most convenient thing to do.

Well, enter the Razer Huntsman Mini Analog keyboard.

As you can easily guess by simply reading its name, this is a mini keyboard, but at the same time, it’s based on the Huntsman model we (and pretty much everybody else) already praised.

The Huntsman Mini Analog is therefore a 60% gaming keyboard that uses a similar approach, being fitted with the same Razer Analog Optical Switches with adjustable actuation just like its bigger sibling.

If you’ve only used traditional switches before, playing games with the Huntsman Mini will feel uncomfortable at first. The learning curve is obviously much shorter in the case of pro gamers, but the concept is as simple as it is brilliant.

Basically, the switches allow for multiple commands in just one stroke, all based on how far a key is pressed. In other words, the same key can do multiple things depending on how hard you press it. Razer also offers dual-step actuation, which technically comes down to setting two different functions in a single keypress, once again based on how far the key goes. In games where combos are the right way to win, you can imagine how useful this can be.

And this doesn’t stop here. The Huntsman Mini also comes with an 8-way WASD movement, which obviously comes in very handy for FPS games. In some ways, it feels like you’re playing using a PlayStation controller thanks to the thumbstick-inspired feeling that this concept seems to provide.

At first glance, the Huntsman Mini feels, well, mini, and if you’ve only used a regular keyboard before, using it might feel like a huge pain in the neck. And at some level, it really is, though very important to know is that Razer’s keyboard isn’t supposed to be an all-in-one product. It is specifically aimed at gamers, so if you’re thinking of buying the keyboard for working in Microsoft Word, that’s wrong.

The 60% form factor makes it super easy to carry around, and it’s pretty clear where Razer has been aiming for with this design. The keyboard doesn’t eat too much desk space, and traveling with it in a backpack is pretty convenient.

The build quality is top-notch, as you’d normally expect from a Razer device. The casing uses aluminum and matte finishing, while the doubleshot PBT keycaps are unlikely to wear off over time. This isn’t necessarily surprising, as the same approach has been used for other Razer products as well, and they’ve already proved quite durable.

Needless to say, the Razer Huntsman Mini also comes with a series of other extras, including a detachable USB Type-C cable, onboard memory, lighting presets (with Chroma RGB support) and 5 different profiles.

CONCLUSION

Without a doubt, the Huntsman Mini is a great piece of gaming hardware, and in many ways, it’s a keyboard that kind of grows on you the more you use it.

Razer’s new switch system is brilliant, and while it takes time to fully discover its potential, once you do it it’s really hard to go back to a regular keyboard. Unfortunately, not all games allow players to take full advantage of its capabilities, but those that do allow gamers to precisely figure out what Razer had in mind when it came up with this device.

At the end of the day, if you’re into pro gaming and want a magic keyboard that you can easily carry around, the Huntsman Mini is without a doubt a choice worth having in mind. On the other hand, if you have the space on the desk or just want a keyboard that is large enough to also do some other stuff, maybe its bigger brother launched in 2021 is the better way to go.
