The game doesn't have a release window at the moment

The Ratchet & Clank franchise was present at PlayStation's The Future of Gaming event with a brand new title called Rift Apart. Developed by Insomniac Games, the same studio behind the latest Spider-Man games, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart doesn't have a release window, so it's safe to assume that it won't be a PlayStation 5 launch title.

However, that doesn't prevent the folks at Insomniac Games to reveal some of the most important gameplay features that were only made possible thanks to the PlayStation 5. In a video released over the weekend, Insomniac's Creative Director Marcus Smith explained how Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart benefit from the innovations of the PlayStation 5.

The most important piece of hardware that makes Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart a game without loading screens is the PlayStation 5's new ultra-fast SSD. Also, the new DualSense controller offers an exceptional gunplay experience thanks to the immersive haptic feedback.

Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart brings new planets to the franchise and alternate versions of the old ones. This is a welcome change since the game will have players travel quite a lot between these planets. Also, characters that appeared in previous games will now be playable, such as Lady Lombax.

As the name suggests, the upcoming third-person shooter platform game introduces a new mechanic that lets players use rift portals to move instantly to new locations or new worlds. Besides benefiting from the PlayStation 5's ultra-fast SSD, the game will also take advantage of the console's ray tracing hardware, and support major visual effects like ray-traced reflections.

It's unlikely that Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart will be launched this year, but let's just wait for Insomniac's confirmation. We also don't know if Sony plans to release it on current-generation platforms as well, even though some gameplay features might not be available on the PlayStation 4.
