On February 28, 2017, the Raspberry Pi Foundation celebrated the fifth anniversary of the extremely popular single-board computer (SBC) with the release of Raspberry Pi Zero W.

What's Raspberry Pi Zero W? Well, it's a variant of the tiny Raspberry Pi Zero that features onboard wireless LAN and Bluetooth support. Raspberry Pi Zero W is here to fill in the gap that Raspberry Pi Zero left in regard to wireless connectivity by integrating it into the core product, along with Bluetooth 4.0 functionality, of course.

"It’s five years since we launched the original Raspberry Pi, selling a hundred thousand units in the first day, and setting us on the road to a lifetime total (so far) of over twelve million units. To celebrate, we’re announcing a new product: meet Raspberry Pi Zero W," said Eben Upton, Raspberry Pi Founder.

Technical specifications of Raspberry Pi Zero W

Raspberry Pi Zero W's technical specifications include a single-core processor running at 1GHz, 512MB RAM, 802.11n wireless LAN powered by the Cypress CYW43438 wireless chip that's also used in the Raspberry Pi 3 Model B SBC, HAT-compatible 40-pin header, mini-HDMI port, micro-USB OTG (On-the-Go) port, and micro-USB power.

The new Zero variant also ships with composite video and reset headers, as well as a CSI camera connector. The Raspberry Pi Foundation believes that Raspberry Pi Zero W will make for a better general-purpose computer that you'll be able to use for a lot more scenarios than the $5 Raspberry Pi Zero.

Talking about the price, Raspberry Pi Zero W comes with a price tag of $10, accompanied by an official case produced in collaboration with Kinneir Dufort and T-Zero. The injection-moulded case features three interchangeable lids and uses the same design pattern as the official Raspberry Pi 3 case.

Without any further ado, you can buy the Raspberry Pi Zero W SBC and its official case right now from pi3g in Germany, Kubii in France, Italy, Spain, and Portugal, Kiwi Electronics in the Netherlands, Luxembourg, and Belgium, ModMyPi in the UK, Samm Teknoloji in Turkey, and many others via the official announcement.
