Retro-inspired role-playing games have gotten quite numerous nowadays, as more and more studios are trying to recreate the stellar titles that marked the childhoods of their developers.

Legends of Pixelia, from SimaGames, is no exception, as at first glance this new title bears a big resemblance to the original Legend of Zelda titles, while crossed with more recent experiences like The Binding of Isaac.

Throw in the local 4-player cooperative mode and the new indie project, which is currently in Steam Early Access, is looking quite interesting.

Does Legends of Pixelia manage to make a solid early impression or should we move on to another tale? Let's find out.

Legends of Pixelia adds strategy on top of retro mechanics

Legends of Pixelia brings forth a campaign mode and a local Versus experience, where you can try to take out up to three of your friends at once. In the actual campaign, you can venture forth alone or with your aforementioned buddies.

While most veterans can easily figure out what mechanics are present in Legends of Pixelia, the actual combat is a bit more complex than the genre's usual recipe. You can pick from several hero classes, such as Knight, Paladin, or Barbarian, each with different capabilities and stats.

You can employ a regular slashing attack, as well as cooldown-based moves. These include a melee attack, a ranged one, a quick dash, or a block and they add a strategy layer, as you can't just run around, chasing enemies with regular slashes.

The level design is pretty good and the enemies are varied, with some foes even using various shields that require a certain type of attack to dispel. As such, you do have to pay a lot of attention in combat in order to survive.

While you do find gold through levels, you can only spend it after clearing a zone, while interacting with your blacksmith. There are also treasure rooms that allow you to pick from three different rewards.

Legends of Pixelia may employ a pixelated visual style but the effects are quite good and the whole presentation manages to make an impression. The soundtrack is also decent but it doesn't stand out all that much.

Overall, Legends of Pixelia is shaping up to be a fun retro-themed role-playing experience. Its visuals are attractive, its combat requires a decent dose of strategy, and it can only get better in Steam Early Access.
