New series of Always Connected PCs coming this year

A new-generation Always Connected PCs powered by Windows 10 on ARM is projected to hit the market later this year, and according to a new report, they could come with an exclusive processor this time.

Windows 10 on ARM devices are powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon chips, which are typically used on mobile devices but undergo a series of optimizations to be fitted on PCs.

While the first models were powered by a tweaked version of the Snapdragon 835 chip, the same one that was installed on high-end smartphones like the Samsung Galaxy S8, the 2018 models would come with an exclusive processor called Snapdragon 850.

A report from WinFuture reveals that this CPU could reach almost 3 GHz in turbo mode, while also being specifically optimized for more efficient heat dissipation. This means that the chip itself would stay cool more time, in its turn offering better performance on Windows 10 on ARM devices.

New models coming this year

Given that Snapdragon chips themselves were originally built for mobile devices, using them on laptops obviously generates more load, which in turn produces excessive heat and a drop in terms of performance. With this new type of processor based on the Snapdragon 845, Qualcomm would optimize the way the heat is handled, presumably making PCs a bit faster.

According to the cited source, several models running these chips are already in the works, including Lenovo Europe, HP Chimera 2, and Asus Thanos.

No other specifics are available right now, like information regarding the release date, but if these projects advance without any major setbacks, the launch could take place sometime in the fall.

The first-generation Always Connected PCs has been highly criticized for performance limitations, so by the looks of things, Microsoft and its partners are specifically trying to address these problems with the new models. It remains to be seen, obviously, if this is going to work with this new processor.
