Smartphones on low battery might become a thing of the past

Being able to wirelessly charge your mobile device is something smartphone enthusiasts surely appreciate due to convenience and ease of use (no cables needed to plug in the device).

However there’s a caveat to the setup - wireless charging is quite slow, especially compared to modern phones, which come bundled with fast charging (like the LG G4).

The good news is that the Wireless Power Consortium has just announced that their new Qi standard will get increased power output. So the upcoming version of Qi wireless charging will be able to deliver 15 watts of power to devices that are equipped to support the standard.

Currently, Qi chargers only manage to push 5 watts, so as you can see, the Wireless Power Consortium is tripling the capacity with their new iteration.

There is no timeline for the release of the new standard

The specifications that got outlined by the Wireless Power Consortium entail that there’s a standard makers of Qi devices must abide by to bestow compatibility across devices. Which basically means you’ll have to buy a new wireless charging pad if you want faster wireless charging to become available for your device. The good news is that the accessory will be compatible with any Qi devices you might currently have.

At this point, it’s not clear whether existing devices, such as the Samsung Galaxy S6 or HTC One M9, will also benefit from fast charging or some hardware tweaks will have to be employed to make that possible. The Wireless Power Consortium is yet to clarify this aspect, and when it does, we’ll be sure to update you.

With the power of fast charging technology and faster wireless charging speeds, phones of the future will be able to jump back in the saddle and serve you a lot faster.

The latest phone that’s said to come out with a fast charging technology called mCharge is the Meizu MX5.

The flagship is expected to make a debut towards the end of the month and customers picking it up will be able to charge their phones up to 25% in only 10 minutes and up to 60% in 40 minutes. We don’t know whether the Meizu MX5 will benefit from wireless charging, but if the answer is a positive one, you’ll be able to get it up and running in no time.
