After the Samsung Galaxy Note5 went live and the entire buzz around it died down, the next best thing to focus on is the Galaxy S7 flagship. The device already leaked a couple of times in the rumor mill, showing us that the Korean tech giant continues to intensely test the Snapdragon 820 for its upcoming high-end device.

But Samsung might be working towards other pretty powerful devices too. The folks at G for Games stumbled upon on unidentified Samsung smartphone in the Geekbench database, which was shown running on Qualcomm’s unannounced Snapdragon 620 SoC under the hood. The speculation is that this device is actually the Samsung Galaxy A9 handset.

The Snapdragon 620 (MSM8976) was spotted making an appearance in benchmarks a while ago and interestingly revealed a pretty good performance, comparable to that of the Snapdragon 810.

The chip should make it out into the world with four Cortex A72 cores clocked at 1.8GHz, which explains the encouraging results. The other four cores making up the octa-core setup at 1.2GHz A53 variety.

To compare, the Snapdragon 620 managed to snatch 1,513 points in the single-core test and 4,051 points in the multi-core test. By comparison, the Snapdragon 810 managed to hit 1,227 points in the single-core test and 4,425 points in the multi-core one.

The Snapdragon 620 will be pretty advanced

Going back to the possible Galaxy A9, the terminal has been spotted carrying 3GB of RAM onboard and running Android 5.1.1 Lollipop out of the box. This time, the phone scored 1,325 points in the single-core test and 4,461 in the multi-core one.

The benchmark doesn’t specifically say that we’re actually dealing with the Galaxy A9, but if we’re to look at the current Galaxy A8, the specs of the mystery device do show an incremental progress.

The Galaxy A8 arrived with a Snapdragon 615 SoC under the hood working in combination with 2GB of RAM and Android 5.1 Lollipop out of the box. The Samsung Galaxy A series offers upper middle-ranger devices of good quality and the Korean tech giant is probably looking to expand the family with a new model by the end of 2015.
