Sony want backwards compatibility for PS2 games

PlayStation 4 is the only console that was released without any kind of backwards compatibility, but it looks like Sony will correct that problem, at least in part, by implementing a sort of PS2 emulation.

Emulating the PlayStation 2 games doesn't sound like a bad idea if we keep in mind that PS2 had been around for more than a decade and had lots and lots of great games. At least this is the theory, but gamers will have to be real fans of those games because they will be disappointed when they start one of them on a modern full HD TV.

Before going up in the attic and starting to dig those games out, you should know that it's not something implemented at the console level that will allow users to play anything they want. It doesn't work that way. It's done for each game, or at least this is what it has looked like until now.

Buying games all over again?

According to a report posted on wired.com, Sony has confirmed that it's working on a way to bring back PlayStation 2 games back from the dead, but they refused to comment further than that.

Apparently, there is PlayStation 4 bundle out there that comes with Star Wars: Battlefront, but it also includes Super Star Wars, Star Wars: Racer Revenge, Star Wars: Jedi Starfighter, and Star Wars: Bounty Hunter, all of which are PlayStation 2 titles.

It's only normal to think what will happen next. Will PlayStation 4 users have to buy their favorite PlayStation 2 games all over again, or is there some bigger change planned for the future? That remains to be seen.

Also, we need to point out that PlayStation 3 backward compatibility has been ruled out, and there is a simple reason for that. PlayStation 4 is powerful enough to emulate PS2 games, but it can't do the same with PS3 games. The architecture of the previous platform is too different, making any kind of porting work way too expensive.
