Launched two years ago, Phantom Doctrine was quite popular among XCOM fans since it offered a similar formula. Now the developer CreativeForge Games is back with a sequel that switches the perspective from top-down to third-person.

Not only that but Phantom Doctrine2: The Cabal is no longer a turn-based strategy game. Instead, the studio opted for a more mainstream approach, so the Phantom Doctrine sequel is now tagged as a third-person shooter with stealth elements. It feels very much like a Hitman game in the Cold War era.

Just like the original game, the sequel has a very interesting premise. Phantom Doctrine 2: The Cabal presents an alternative version of the events in which the Chernobyl explosion is the beginning of a series of terrorist attacks executed by an organization called the Cabal.

For veterans of the series, Phantom Doctrine 2 developers promise new modes and gameplay options that enable players to gain a completely new experience from the game. That's quite understandable considering that they'll be playing from the third-person view in real-time.

The folks at CreativeForge Games mention that the gameplay consists of elements of stealth, silent killings, impersonating enemies, hiding corpses, shootings, plot tracking, mission planning, and recruiting new agents. Most of these gameplay elements are the pillars of the Hitman series, so if you like those games, you'll probably love Phantom Doctrine 2 as well.

The single-player campaign has more than 15 hours, which is very nice. Also, the game features a tactical pause system that lets players solve tasks in the most optimal way. Each mission in the game matters and each comes with its own optional goals, additional loot, and data to collect, which can greatly boost your organization's resources.

Phantom Doctrine 2: The Cabal doesn't have a release window yet, but it's already been listed on Steam. If you're a sucker for Hitman-like games, you may want to wishlist it to learn more about its release.
