Konami scored a new victory for the upcoming PES 2020 football sim by snagging the rights for the Italian Serie A.

For the longest time, Electronic Arts and FIFA managed to corral the rights to all of the significant football championships in the world. It left Konami and its PES sim to settle for inventing names and players that resembled the reality.

What’s surprising is that even without all of those official licenses, PES managed to hang on and gather a following. Not to mention the fact that the game innovates with each new release, pushing EA to do the same with FIFA. It turns out that having the official player’s name and teams is not as important as some might think.

It’s not exclusive

The news that Konami and PES2020 managed to snag the exclusive rights for Juventus and its players, including Ronaldo, took everyone by surprise. It’s a big deal, especially since a lot of people are playing with Juventus in online FIFA matches.

This new development meant that FIFA had to do something they haven’t done in a long time, at least not for major teams. Now, FIFA 20 will have Piemonte Calcio instead of Juventus. There no information on the player names. Now, Konami announced that it fully licensed Series A, which in itself would be great news, but they also managed to secure the rights for UEFA EURO 2020. The tournament will be available through an update pack at a later date.

From the looks of it, Konami is slowly managing to secure necessary rights and license, which only puts pressure on FIFA and Electronic Arts. In the end, the players are going to win from this battle.

Pro Evolution Soccer 2020 is expected to arrive on September 10th for PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4.
