The development team at Blizzard is now ready to confirm that it will launch Overwatch on May 24 of this year on the PC, the Xbox One, and the PlayStation 4, and that an open testing period for the title will take place between May 5 and 9 on all the platforms.

All those who place a pre-order for the title before April 29 will be able to get access to the beta two days earlier and will also be able to bring in a friend to show them what the experience has to offer.

Blizzard makes it clear that all the progress and the content that's earned during the beta period for Overwatch will be wiped before the full launch to ensure that a level playing field is available when the full version of the experience goes live.

At the same time, all the 21 heroes included in the third-person shooter and action title will be offered, and gamers will be able to see the main modes and the maps in action because developers believe the core content is ready to be shown to a wide variety of players.

Jeff Kapan, the leader of the development team, working on Overwatch, says that his team is also thankful for those who have played the game during the closed beta and have helped refine the main features.

For the open beta, gamers who want to play on the Xbox One will need a subscription to Xbox Live while those who use a PlayStation 4 will not require one to PlayStation Plus for testing, but the full version will ask for one.

Overwatch will offer an alternative to classic MOBA experiences

Blizzard is not using the Multiplayer Online Battle Arena genre to describe its coming title, but there are plenty of elements that will be familiar to fans, including the variety of heroes and the fact that teamwork is required for all those who want to score wins.

Overwatch features six-versus-six matches, and the unique twist is that players will be able to change their character every time they die to make sure that they are well adapted to the conditions of the battlefield.

The game will not use a free-to-play model, with Blizzard saying that it wants to offer a wide array of new and interesting content to all players who are willing to pay an initial 60 dollars or Euro to pick up a copy.
