More phones believed to be supported in Insider program

Microsoft has made several controversial decisions for its phones lately, and the most recent took place in April when the company shipped the Creators Update but pledged to support only 11 different devices.

Despite many other Windows phones being able to run the Creators Update just fine, and with Microsoft leaving so many models behind, most users turned to a hack involving editing Device Target Info on unsupported phones to continue getting builds.

And earlier today, it all seemed like the hack was no longer needed as Microsoft quietly increased the number of devices supported by the Windows Insider program and getting updates officially. It all happened after Twitter user @gus33000 discovered this Windows Insider page where Microsoft lists the Windows 10 Mobile Insider Preview supported phones.

As you can see in the screenshot here, several older Windows phones were added to the list, including the majority of Lumia devices (such as the Lumia 930 and the Lumia 1520), but also 4 different BLU models and the Alcatel OneTouch Fierce XL.

Just an outdated website

Unfortunately, Microsoft officials say the website was actually outdated and someone forgot to remove the unsupported phones from the list, which means that you still get new builds on just 11 Windows phones. The company has since updated the website to display the correct information.

The next Windows 10 Mobile update is projected to land sometime later this year as “feature2,” despite the original plans to synchronize mobile and PC releases. While PCs are projected to get the Fall Creators Update in September with lots of improvements, the future of the mobile platform is still uncertain, especially because 99 percent of the builds that Microsoft released lately included bug fixes and no new features.

Microsoft is believed to be working on a mobile overhaul that would include major software updates and a new device, but details in this regard are yet to be confirmed as the project is said to be under development behind the closed doors.
