A new sequel is being made for System Shock

OtherSide Entertainment, a studio that’s currently working on fantasy RPG Underworld Ascendant, has confirmed that is now also developing on System Shock 3, a direct sequel to the original series.

There is a good reason why there haven’t been any proper System Shock sequels until now. The rights to the franchise got lost in a maze of legal battles, and they moved from one studio to another. We had some spiritual sequels, like the Bioshock series, but nothing official. That’s not about to change.

The OtherSide Entertainment studio is a new one, but the guy in charge, Paul Neurath, is one of the original directors for System Shock 3, so they might be headed in the right direction. From what has been revealed until now, we have some good information, but there is at least one point that might make a few fans cringe.

System Shock 3 is in early development

The developers haven’t said anything about the engine that’s going to be used, so they are still planning. In fact, they also released a survey with a few questions. One of those survey questions was about VR support (virtual reality), but that technology is still too young and System Shock 3 is a much too important game.

“Key members of the original System Shock and System Shock 2 teams will be part of the sequel. This includes Paul Neurath, who oversaw the original series’ development; Nate Wells, a senior artist on System Shock 2; and Waters, the lead concept artist of both original games,” the developers wrote in the official report.

It’s interesting to note that OtherSide Entertainment made a point of saying that they secured the exclusive IP rights to all future versions of the franchise, and they have an agreement with Night Dive Studios for the trademark. This was a sticky situation, but it seems to have been solved.

We expect to get more details about the new game early next year.
