Johnny Depp showed up in character, was hilarious

“Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales” was one of the projects teased this weekend at the ongoing D23 Expo 2015. It’s one of Disney’s biggest franchises and it’s coming back to the big screen in July 2017.

While Depp has been in Australia shooting (he’s reprising his famous Captain Jack Sparrow role, of course), the rumor mill has been saying that Orlando Bloom, who left the franchise with Keira Knightley after “At World’s End,” will also return.

Bloom himself confirmed he was in talks with Disney for the job, but it really doesn’t mean much when actors make this kind of statements, at least not until the studio backs up their claims.

Well, Disney did it on day 2 of the Expo, Slash Film informs. Bloom is back on board for the first time since 2007, when he and Keira left because they wanted to do more with their careers than just be tied to Disney (their words, more or less).

Fans will recognize other familiar faces in Geoffrey Rush, Stephen Graham and Kevin R. McNally. Javier Bardem and Brenton Thwaites are among the new additions to the franchise.

Another amazing “Pirates”-related thing to go down at the Expo was Johnny Depp’s surprise appearance on stage, in full Cpt. Sparrow character. Though audiences probably expected him to introduce new footage or at least reveal something about the film, he did nothing of the sort.

He was still hilarious though; he threw grapes at the audience and slurred his words in Sparrow fashion, and cracked joke after joke, so at the end, even though they had learned nothing new about the film, the fans were still pretty excited about what they’d just seen.
