The factory-sealed device was sold at auction this month

It’s not a secret that the iPhone is a pretty expensive gadget, as a top-of-the-line version of the iPhone 14 costs nearly $2,000.

But on the other hand, one of the most expensive iPhones sold these days managed to fetch no more, no less than $39,339 at an auction earlier this month.

And before you ask, no, it’s not a new-generation iPhone but a factory-sealed 2007 iPhone that was recently sold online.

That’s right, someone paid nearly $40,000 for an original and unsealed 2007 iPhone, even if the device comes with specifications that are already outdated. On the other hand, the 8GB of storage and the 2-megapixel camera make for a very cool page of tech history, especially given the iPhone in question has never been used.

As per AI, the auction was indeed expected to reach $30,000, but the selling price that got close to $40,000 is still surprising.

“This factory sealed, first-release example is in exceptional condition.  Virtually flawless along the surface and edges, the factory seal is clean with correct seam details and tightness.  Labels on the reverse are correctly pristine beneath the seal.  All original - no aftermarket stickers or UPC labels on this one.  Brand new, never activated.  Collectors and investors would be hard pressed to find a superior example.  Relevance and rarity comprise a winning formula for this red hot collectible,” the description of the iPhone reads.

In a statement for the cited source, the founder of LCG Auction admits that the original iPhone rapidly caught the attention of collectors out there.

"We expected the bidding for this item to be fervent and it did not disappoint as a handful of avid and sophisticated collectors drove the price from just over $10,000 on Sunday afternoon to this record-setting amount by Sunday night," LCG Auctions founder Mark Montero was quoted as saying.
