The world of foldable phones is growing and growing, and the latest important name to join the party is none other than Oppo.

While the company has so far remained tight-lipped on such a device, a leak coming via Weibo indicates an Oppo foldable phone is closer than expected.

The tipster says the launch could take place in the second quarter of the year, and so in theory, an official announcement should be made by the end of June.

Of course, no specifics are available right now, but Oppo joining the foldable device frenzy isn’t necessarily surprising.

Samsung still the leader of foldables

Samsung itself has been pushing hard for foldables, and the South Korean company has already teased new devices that could bring this form factor to lower price points. In other words, Samsung wants foldable phones to become more mainstream, and 2021 is the year that could make it all happen.

“True to our heritage of staying ahead of the curve with trailblazing mobile tech, we’ll be expanding our portfolio of foldables, so this groundbreaking category is more accessible to everyone. And while we’re already known for our revolutionary cameras, we’ll never stop trying to outdo ourselves — so be on the lookout for super-intelligent, pro-grade camera and video capabilities in 2021. We’ve also been paying attention to people’s favorite aspects of the Galaxy Note experience and are excited to add some of its most well-loved features to other devices in our lineup,” Dr. TM Roh, President & Head of Mobile Communications Business, Samsung Electronics, said in late 2020.

Samsung’s new foldable devices are also expected to be here in just a few months, so expect more information to make the headlines through unofficial channels as we get closer to the launch.
