openSUSE Project's Douglas DeMaio informed those running the Tumbleweed rolling operating system about the latest software updates that landed in the official, stable repositories.

openSUSE Tumbleweed is always getting the latest GNU/Linux technologies and Open Source applications, and today we're happy to inform you that the Linux 4.9 kernel finally made its way into the software repos of the distributions, along with cleaned-up configuration settings for the Mesa 3D Graphics Library.

That right there is great news for Linux gamers using OpenSuSE Tumbleweed as their go-to desktop OS, as a combination between the latest Mesa 13 packages, Linux kernel 4.9, and X.Org Server 1.19 enables support for older AMD Radeon HD graphics cards from the Southern Islands / GNC 1.0 family, such as HD 7xxx or HD 8xxx.

"There were plenty of Tumbleweed snapshots leading up to the holiday season and openSUSE’s rolling release is gliding into 2017 with several new packages on the horizon," said Douglas DeMaio in today's announcement. "The last snapshot of 2016, 20161226, updated the Linux Kernel to 4.9, which was a good way to end the year."

Here's what else landed for openSUSE Tumbleweed

But that's not all that landed in openSUSE Tumbleweed during the last few weeks, as there are also many other updated apps and core components, among which we can mention KDE Plasma 5.8.5 LTS, NetworkManager 1.4.4, Samba 4.5.3, Mozilla Thunderbird 45.6.0, GnuTLS 3.5.7, Wireshark 2.2.3, and GNU nano 2.7.3.

Packages like python3-setuptools 32.3.1, yast2-network 3.2.17, libvirt-python 2.5.0, btrfsprogs 4.9, and GNOME Online Accounts 3.22.3 have landed as well, and many other received small updates that either patch bugs and security vulnerabilities or add various improvements.

If you're using openSUSE Tumbleweed, you should already have all the goodies mentioned above if you've installed all the available updates. If not, we invite you to get them right from the official channels and enjoy a faster and more performant Tumbleweed operating system.
