Softpedia has been informed by the OpenMandriva Team that the upcoming OpenMandriva Lx3 GNU/Linux operating system will use the LLVM Clang compiler by default.

In a very short blog announcement published on May 12, 2016, on the project's homepage, OpenMandriva contributor Jean-Claude Vanier brags with the fact that OpenMandriva is currently the only Linux kernel-based distribution that uses Clang as main compiler instead of the well-known GCC (GNU Compiler Collection).

"OpenMandriva is currently the only distribution that uses Clang as main compiler," said Jean-Claude Vanier, OpenMandriva Lx moderator and contributor. "Though there is no clear difference between both compilers, that proves, at least, that we are not wrong using it."

OpenMandriva Lx3 "Einsteinium" is now in development

Now that every other GNU/Linux distro out there is trying to switch to the latest GCC 6 as default compiler, the OpenMandriva development team have decided to think a little different and use LLVM Clang as the main compiler for the upcoming OpenMandriva Lx3 operating system, which is currently under heavy testing.

A first Beta of OpenMandriva Lx3 2015.0 Linux shipped at the beginning of April 2016 with dozens of new components, including the KDE Plasma 5.6 desktop environment with KDE Frameworks 5.20 and KDE Applications 15.12.3, systemd 229, X.Org Server 1.18.2, Mesa 11.2 3D Graphics Library, as well as Linux kernel 4.1.18 LTS.

Dubbed Einsteinium, OpenMandriva Lx3 2015.0 should get an RC (Release Candidate) build in the coming weeks, and the final release of the anticipated Linux kernel-based operating system might hit the streets this summer, in June or July. For now, the OpenMandriva Team hasn't shared with us any details about the release schedule of the upcoming OS, so these are just our predictions based on previous releases.
