Stories about electronics overheating and exploding aren’t novel. We’ve been hearing countless tales of Samsung devices bursting into flames, damaging the environment in which they were placed and even the unlucky owners who happened to be nearby.

Today we have a similar story which has at its center a smartphone that has never been featured in headlines like this before.

Last week, New Delhi citizen Ankur Dugar placed his 64GB Sandstone Black OnePlus One device near him on the bed, like he always did, and went to sleep. The phone was charging while his owner road tripped to wonderland.

And then, the unexpected happened. Around 9 am in the morning, Dugar awoke to the smell of fire and quickly discovered what was at fault: his trusty OnePlus One had caught on fire and was slowly burning next to him.

Dugar had the presence of spirit to quickly throw the phone away from the bedding. He then thanked heavens for awakening when he did and proceeded to take some images of the damaged unit.

As you can see in the photos he posted online (on his Facebook page), most of the damage to the phone appears to be in the location of the battery.

Dugar also went on to immediately contact the OnePlus customer care team. After hearing out his story (and probably reviewing the evidence), he was instructed to go to the service center for evaluation. The user hopes to prove the fire wasn’t his fault and to get a free replacement.

He has also contacted an attorney, even if he claims his replacement has already been approved.

We’re not told whether Dugar was using a third-party charger or if him placing the phone directly on the bedding had something to do with the battery overheating and catching fire.

OnePlus recently unveiled their second phone to date, the OnePlus 2, which comes with a Snapdragon 810 under the hood. So this might not be the last time we hear about OnePlus products getting hotter than they should.
