The incident apparently occurred in India

Just recently, we reported that a Samsung Galaxy Note 7 unit exploded while charging in China and it seems that another smartphone has caught fire while its battery was charging. Apparently, an OnePlus One smartphone caught fire while charging.

Twitter user Deepak Gosain posted images on Twitter with his OnePlus One unit that basically turned into charcoal. The back panel came off and the battery seems to have expanded before catching fire. The incident occurred in India and Gosain stated that he left the device charging next to him while he slept. The device had been charging for about two hours when it caught on fire.

Interestingly, the images also offer a glimpse of the charging cable, which seems to be partially plugged into the phone, but undamaged. Gosain told Phone Arena that he never used a third party charger with the phone, which would mean that such incidents could potentially occur with other units as well.

A replacement was offered in the form of a new OnePlus 3

The user took the device to a service center and a replacement was offered. The service center wanted to provide the user with a brand new OnePlus 3 but Gosain refused. He requested monetary compensation instead, but the amount wasn’t disclosed. He also requested an Apple iPhone.

OnePlus came out with a statement on the matter, saying “Our top priority is the health and safety of our customers. We are confident in the quality of our products, which all undergo industry-leading safety tests. We are already in touch with this customer, but since this is an open case, we cannot disclose any further information.”

It’s quite worrying to hear about such cases, especially when reportedly the original charging cable was used. Just to be on the safe side, users of regardless what smartphones should always use the charging cables that come with said smartphones and not rely on third-party cables, as such incidents could occur.
