OnePlus is prepping another phone for launch

After the OnePlus 2 flagship was launched into the wild a few weeks ago, OnePlus’ CEO said we should be expecting another handset towards the end of the year, but he didn’t give us much info to go on at that time.

Now, the folks at Gizmo China claim insider sources have confirmed for them that the Chinese startup is gearing up to launch the OnePlus 2 mini in a few months. Rumors about OnePlus prepping a mini model have been circling ever since the OnePlus One was launched.

The current report says that the OnePlus 2 mini will be a mid-range affair, so don’t expect it to pack a QHD display or a Snapdragon 810 processor. On the other hand, the phone might come with a Full HD display and a Snapdragon 615 processor.

The OnePlus 2 mini might pack a 5-inch display and could take advantage of some of the specs of last year’s OnePlus One. Surely, we won’t find a USB Type-C port on board, nor NFC and other high-end features. A fingerprint scanner is a 50-50 chance, since such technology has started being pushed to lower-end models.

OnePlus 2 mini: release data unknown

The sources didn’t pinpoint an exact launch schedule, but it is speculated the shrunken OnePlus 2 version will make it out around the time IFA 2015 kick starts.

The phone should arrive on the market with a price tag of $250 / €227 to $300 / €274 and will be the company’s first attempt to cater to the needs of customers who don’t want to spend a fortune on a handset.

Back in 2014, a purported OnePlus One mini device with Snapdragon 615 under the hood popped up in benchmarks. The handset was shown to boast a 5-inch display and bundled two cameras of 8MP variety.

The phone also leaked in a few images showing the front and back panel, so maybe OnePlus is finally getting ready to launch that device.
