Microsoft announces new storage upgrade option

Microsoft has released a new storage upgrade option for OneDrive, allowing consumers to increase the maximum capacity to 2TB.

Omar Shahine, Microsoft Director of Program Manage for OneDrive and SharePoint, revealed on Twitter that users can now grow OneDrive storage to 2TB by purchasing an option on top of their existing accounts.

In other words, what you need to do to reach 2TB storage capacity is purchase the OneDrive plan that brings your 1TB storage and then add another 1TB upgrade on top of that.

The 1TB upgrade is available for $9.99 per month, but Microsoft allows users to add more storage in increments of 200GB starting at $1.99 per month.

The current 1TB plan is available with Office 365 Personal, which is priced at $6.99 per month. This brings the total cost of a 2TB plan to approximately $17 per month.

OneDrive versus rivals

Free OneDrive accounts are provided with 5GB of cloud storage at no cost. A paid plan, on the other hand, also includes access to Office 365, which means you can access Microsoft Office apps in the cloud, always benefitting from the latest security patches and feature updates.

Additionally, these can be used on multiple PCs and Macs, phones and tablets running Windows, iOS, and Android. A bunch of extras are also offered, such as ransomware detection and recovery.

On the other hand, Google offers 15GB of free storage, and the available plans go as high as 30TB. Apple offers 5GB of free storage of each new account, and upgrades to 2TB are available as well for a price of $9.99 per month.

OneDrive has become a key part of Microsoft’s product portfolio and is now deeply integrated into the majority of solutions offered by the company, including here Office, Windows, and others.
