Apple is projected to take the wraps off new iPhones as soon as this September, but it’s the 2020 generation the one that’s getting most of the attention.

Judging from all the reports that made the rounds lately, the 2020 iPhone lineup will come with major upgrades, like the full switch to OLED and 5G support.

And now, top Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo says the 2020 model will also integrate time-of-flight sensors, substantially refining the performance of the rear cameras, while opening the doors to major new capabilities.

First of all, a time-of-flight sensor, or ToF, will allow for Apple to continue its push for augmented reality, while at the same time powering higher-fidelity 3D photos. This is a direction that the Cupertino-based tech giant has been exploring lately, and with the 2020 iPhone, it’ll finally make a major step in this regard.

Full switch to OLED next year

As per 9to5mac citing an earlier forecast of the same analyst, the ToF sensors could make their way to the iPad lineup as well, possibly in early 2020. The 2020 iPhone generation is due in September next year, according to Apple’s typical iPhone release schedule.

Apple will unveil a trio of iPhones in a just a couple of months. The 2019 series of iPhones will include direct successors to the iPhone XS, XS Max, and XR, featuring almost the same look and dimensions as the current models.

On the other, the 2020 iPhone family is likely to come with 5.4-inch, 6.1-inch, and 6.7-inch models, all of which using Face ID, 5G, and OLED. Apple will thus launch the last LCD iPhone this year, with the iPhone XR to move to OLED as well in 2020.

It goes without saying that some details here should be taken with a healthy pinch of salt, as the 2020 iPhone lineup is still in its early planning stages.
