Card-battling some angry sheep-like creatures

I have a run that allows me to deal damage when equipping armor, which is a great way to make sure my hero doesn’t lose health when enemies launch their attacks. But I also need to deal some damage of my own, so I boost one card that affects all three of my opponents and then add some strikes of my own. On my next turn, I will reach Wakfu level six, so I am saving some attacks for that moment, hoping to deal with all my opponents in one massive turn filled with nothing but attacks.

One More Gate: A Wakfu Legend is developed and published by Ankama Studio. I played a demo on the PC using Steam. This is a card-driven rogue-lite experience with a lot of procedurally generated content. Oropo is the protagonist, set to explore the World of Twelve, which involves battles, random encounters, and some story elements. It also involves plenty of dying, which takes the protagonist to a safe village where he can prepare for another run.

The card combat is pretty standard: stack on armor, try to minimize health loss and find ways to strike multiple enemies at once. The runes players will find are very important and a good mix of them will lead to solid runs. Using the Wakfu to deliver massive amounts of damage also requires some tactical planning.

One More Gate does not feature the classic node structure and allows players to move in 3D from one point of interest to another. When not in card combat, gamers will have to manage resources, acquire new cards, and decide when to regain health and when to go for more money.

One More Gate: A Wakfu Legend is a decent-looking game for its genre. The cards and the enemy moves are both easy to use, meaning the player can quickly formulate a plan and execute it. The choice to make movement between points of interest work in 3D is an interesting one but adds little to the game right now. The sound design is decent but, again, does not stand out given the genre it is working in.

Conclusion

One More Gate: A Wakfu Legend is trying to ride the current popularity of the card-driven battler genre but it might not have enough unique elements to do that. I liked fighting big angry sheep in the demo and the mechanics are all solid. But the game needs to find ways to innovate on card combat if it wants to get a big audience.

The World of Twelve and Oropo himself do have some personality, something that the team at Ankama should build on. If the full game can deliver more enemies, more runes, and at least some new mechanics, it might find a solid place in the crowded space it’s working in.
