As it happens every year, season 5 of HBO’s “Game of Thrones” brought several, very surprising twists, including at least a couple of deaths no one saw coming - and which many still hope weren’t actual deaths.

The official book “Game of Thrones: The Noble Houses of Westeros Season 1-5” will put to rest reports that some or all of these dead characters might find their way magically back to the small screen.

As stated in the headline, *this post contains spoilers, so you might want to stop reading if you’re still not caught up with the events of the last season.

Jon Snow may or may not be dead, but Stannis Baratheon is definitely gone. Season 5 saw Brienne finally avenge Renley’s death by beheading an injured Stannis, as he was urging her to do what she had to do.

However, because the death wasn’t shown on screen, which is rare for a show as bloody as GoT, many assumed that he wasn’t really dead or that, if he was, Melisandre (pictured) might be able to bring him back with help from the Lord of Light.

According to the book, Vanity Fair reports, that won’t happen. “Stannis was killed outside of Winterfell by Brienne of Tarth, who wished to avenge Renly’s death,” reads Stannis’ description in the Baratheon chapter.

Then, the final paragraph for Brienne reads, “Brienne killed Stannis.” So there’s no more room for doubt.

On the bright side, Stannis is still alive in George R.R. Martin’s books, which were used as inspiration for the series. So there’s that.
