The hotspot feature on the iPhone is getting a massive update with the release of iOS 15, as a developer has discovered that Apple is working on adding WPA3 support in the next operating system.

The Cupertino-based tech giant officially announced iOS 15 earlier this month, with the launch projected to happen in September according to the typical release calendar.

But at this point, Apple is already shipping preview builds to developers, and these allow us to find out even more details about what’s coming in the operating system once it’s ready for all iPhones out there.

As reported by MacRumors, iOS 15 will include support for WPA3, which means that iPhone users creating a hotspot will be able to protect their networks with this new security protocol. The current iOS version only supports WPA2, so the addition of WPA3 is definitely good news for those relying on their iPhones for Internet access.

iOS 15 coming in September

On the other hand, it’s worth knowing that the introduction of WPA3 support for the iPhone hotspot feature comes some three years after the Wi-Fi alliance officially launched this security protocol.

“Building on the widespread adoption of WPA2 over more than a decade, WPA3 adds new features to simplify Wi-Fi security, enable more robust authentication, and deliver increased cryptographic strength for highly sensitive data markets. As the Wi-Fi industry transitions to WPA3 security, WPA2 devices will continue to interoperate and provide recognized security,” the Wi-Fi Alliance said in a press release in June 2018.

iOS 15 will come with several other important improvements, with the operating system to be available for the iPhone 6s and newer. However, the best experience and the full feature lineup will be offered to the latest-generation iPhones, but more details in this regard will be revealed as the testing program advances.
