The company might skip the entire Volta architecture

While everyone is expecting Nvidia to announce a new generation of GPUs very soon, rumors are now surfacing that the company has no such intentions, at least for the time being.

Nvidia has two upcoming events, GDC (Game Developers Conference) and GTC (Graphics Technology Conference). In fact, the second one is their own conference, and what better venue would there be for letting people know that they are getting the new GTX 2080 or 2070?

If the rumors are true, then Nvidia is not planning to launch anything new, and there are quite a few solid reasons for that. Those reasons include AMD and crypto mining, among other things. It’s not clear how this fits into Nvidia’s promise to launch something every six months, but that was more of a guideline than a promise.

It doesn’t really matter

The problem right now is that a new launch doesn’t even matter all that much. Except for the people digging for gold coins on the Internet, you are not going to find much interest in launching a new GPU.

According to anonymous sources that spoke with TomsHardware, Nvidia has no plans to announced anything new just yet. One of the reasons is that AMD has yet to come with anything that rivals their current GPU solution.

And then we have the crypto mining people that made sure Nvidia is selling all of their chipsets. Technically, the new generation should be Volta, but launching it would ensure that most of them go to crypto mining, while the older and used Pascal generation would flood the market. It’s not good for business in the long run.

Let’s not forget that Nvidia still has to launch the 1080Ti variant, which has been missing from the lineup. So, basically, we have to wait for AMD to make a move, which is a strange strategy.
