Screenshot shows the feature is in development

Tabs are the next big thing happening in Windows 11, and after File Explorer, which was updated with support for this feature earlier this year, it looks like another important app is about to get the same capability.

Oddly enough, the one who revealed the news is a Microsoft employee, despite the feature supposed to remain a secret for now.

More specifically, a screenshot that was originally published on Twitter (and already deleted at the time of writing) revealed tab support in File Explorer as part of what looks to be a very early implementation of the feature.

A message that was seen at the top of the screen in the Notepad window, however, is the reason the screenshot has already been purged. “Confidential. Don’t discuss features or take screenshots.”

And yet, the folks over at Neowin managed to save the screenshot, providing us with a glimpse into what the tab support is going to look in Notepad when it’s ready.

And of course, the whole thing looks and probably works just how you’d expect it. The new feature adds a tab bar at the top of the screen, therefore letting you work with more than just a single document at the same time, all without having multiple instances of Notepad running on the screen.

It’s easy to see why this is such a helpful update, especially if you’ve been using Notepad for text edits or even for coding.

But of course, the confidential warning proves the feature is still in its early days, so it could take a while until it goes live for users. Most likely, it should show up for insiders in the first weeks of 2023, with the global availability most likely planned for the first Moment update of the year for Windows 11.
