Stylus support being planned for Apple’s foldable smartphone

Apple is the next big company to launch a foldable smartphone, and while the Cupertino-based tech giant sticks with its FBI-like secrecy and tries to avoid spilling the beans on new projects, more information emerges through unofficial channels.

While nobody knows for sure when the foldable iPhone could finally get the go-ahead, people familiar with the matter said the device could see the daylight as early as 2022, while others believe such a model wouldn’t arrive until 2024 or 2025 at the earliest.

On the other hand, waiting for four more years to launch a foldable iPhone could mean Apple might eventually be late to the party, especially because other companies, including Samsung, are betting big on this new form factor.

A report from research firm EqualOcean and citing data shared by Omdia indicates that Apple’s foldable iPhone could eventually come with an OLED display between 7.3 and 7.6 inches, and unsurprisingly, it’d come with support for the Apple Pencil.

No word on the launch date

Without a doubt, this isn’t by any means a surprise, as the foldable screen allows the iPhone to switch from one form factor to another in just a second. So while the device would look just like a typical phone right now, it can become a full tablet a second later, similar to the conversion that other foldable smartphones already support.

With support for the Apple Pencil, the foldable iPhone would embrace an approach similar to Microsoft’s Surface Duo, which also supports stylus input.

Needless to say, everything can change overnight, but there’s no doubt Apple wants the foldable iPhone to be a key part of its device portfolio, coming with support for its other accessories. More information will certainly reach the web in the coming months as the work on this device advances.
