Developer Hello Games celebrates five years since the launch of No Man’s Sky and teases the upcoming release the game’s 17th free expansion: Frontiers. Although at launch the game was a pale replica of what the folks at Hello Games promised, the developers managed to turn it around by delivering a bucketload of meaningful updates that completely changed No Man’s Sky (for the better).

Looking back at those five years of arduous work, Hello Games’ founder Sean Murray admitted that his studio didn’t expect “what a wild ride it would be.” According to him, “behind every update, every video, every feature and line in a patch note is a team that cares so deeply for this game,” and judging by the state of the game that’s completely accurate.

On its way to redemption, Hello Games released no less than sixteen free updates that culminated with the PlayStation 5 / Xbox Series X/S launch last year. The most recent major update, Prisms, completely overhauls the game’s visuals by adding new weather effects, new lighting, fuller worlds and much more.

Today, Hello Games that the next step for No Man’s Sky players will unfold in Frontiers, a new expansion coming out sometime in 2021. Unfortunately, not many details about the update are available at the moment, but Murray did say that “Frontiers is something I’m very excited about. In some ways it is just another update, but in other ways it’s a missing piece of the sci-fi fantasy that we’ve always wanted to add, and very fitting for out fifth anniversary.”

More importantly, the saga won’t end with Frontiers, as the studio confirmed it still has a lot of stuff it wants to try, so here is hoping the game will get many more updates in the future. If you haven’t tried No Man’s Sky yet, now would be a great time to pick it up on any of your favorite gaming platform: PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, or PC.
