Playlists can be made by fans that want to play with friends

Doom developer id Software confirms that, while there won't be an official support for cooperative play in the story campaign, players that want to fight alongside buddies can create their own levels via the SnapMap system.

Doom was revealed to the world earlier this year and got quite a lot of different gameplay details at E3 2015, including confirmation for its rebooted story mode or its innovative online features.

At QuakeCon 2015 over the weekend, more information was shared by id Software with fans and now Executive Producer Marty Stratton confirms to PC Gamer some details about possible cooperative play in the new Doom title.

No campaign co-op but players can create their own levels

First up, it seems that the story campaign in Doom won't allow players to fight alongside friends against the AI-controlled demons and monsters. Apparently the team at id Software wanted to focus more on the single-player aspect but Stratton adds that it might think about campaign co-op in future iterations of the shooter series.

However, this doesn't meant that there's no chance for cooperative play in the upcoming title.

Stratton explains that, through the special SnapMap system, which allows users to create their own levels easily and share them with others, they can make cooperative scenarios.

What's more, these levels can be linked in a playlist to produce a campaign-like experience, although it won't be able to carry over weapons or experience from one map to another.

"You create a level experience, and then to create a campaign-type thing you would link those [levels] together in, like, a playlist. You wouldn't necessarily carry weapons from one level to the next. The author could set it up knowing you have this set of weapons as you go into this next component. It's little bit more like a playlist," he explains.

While it's certainly a big disappointing that Doom won't feature an official cooperative experience, between the campaign and the competitive multiplayer, the title is still looking pretty good.
