Windows 11 could be finalized as soon as mid-September

Microsoft is getting ready to finalize Windows 11, with a recent report indicating the new operating system could be signed off as soon as mid-September.

And since we’re only two or three weeks away from this highly anticipated moment, many are wondering whether Microsoft still has the necessary time to introduce new features, such as the support for Android apps, or additional refinements, like the option to move the taskbar to the top and the sides of the screen.

But as it turns out, Microsoft won’t make any big changes as far as the taskbar is concerned before Windows 11 RTM is reached, so if you were hoping to ungroup the icons in the upcoming operating system, you may have to wait a little bit longer for the whole thing.

This is according to Microsoft watcher Zac Bowden, who says mid-September is indeed the target for signing off Windows 11 and choosing the final build that would ship to users.

Cumulative updates for Windows 11

However, this doesn’t necessarily mean new features can’t be added before Windows 11 goes live for production devices. Microsoft will continue to work on the OS using cumulative updates, so further improvements would still roll out, only that they’ll be installed on top of the final build.

Microsoft hasn’t said anything about taskbar improvements, though the company praised its modern approach in the original Windows 11 announcement.

“From the new Start button and taskbar to each sound, font and icon, everything was done intentionally to put you in control and bring a sense of calm and ease. We put Start at the center and made it easier to quickly find what you need. Start utilizes the power of the cloud and Microsoft 365 to show you your recent files no matter what platform or device you were viewing them on earlier, even if it was on an Android or iOS device,” Microsoft said.

Windows 11 is projected to launch for everybody in October.
